Devastated Hong Kong Inhabitants Stunned as Massive Inferno Destroys Housing Buildings
"Approaching the scene, the warmth increases and you can feel it, with the smoke being extremely dense."
Student Thomas Liu was among the many residents drawn to the scene of a tragic inferno that engulfed large portions of the eight-block residential estate in the city's Tai Po area.
No fewer than thirty-six people have died in yesterday's destructive fire currently, with hundreds still missing, indicating that this number will probably grow.
"It's a tragedy," the witness remarked about the incident, noting that he had seen a body being taken away from the location.
Over a thousand other individuals were compelled to leave the development as the blaze expanded, with some making their way to temporary centers that have been set up to shelter them.
The blaze is progressively being contained, but emergency responders indicate they do not know when it will be fully eliminated.
Flames could be witnessed issuing from individual homes as many residents watched in stillness.
"I'm heartbroken. The building contains so numerous neighbours and community members. I do not know what is going on now. Look, all the units are just on fire. I do not know what to accomplish. I pray the government can help us to rebuild after this."
One woman stated that her neighbors dwell inside the complex and she was staying to hear if they managed to evacuate.
A long-term resident, who has resided in the second building of the residential estate for more than four decades years, described listening to "an extremely loud sound" and observing flames erupt in a nearby structure.
"I immediately went inside to collect my possessions," the 66-year-old resident remarked.
"I am uncertain how I emotionally right now. I'm just pondering about where I'm going to stay tonight because I probably cannot go back home."
While the origin of the fire that consumed the multiple tall buildings is still unidentified, the fire are believed to have spread quickly through the temporary structures that covered the buildings, which were in the process of improvements.
Several individuals have demonstrated outrage that such a massive incident could have occurred and questioned the response.
"When there's a brush fire, they will deploy choppers and drop extinguishing materials, but why is there not any deployment and how can they leave additional structures on fire?" inquired a different inhabitant of the complex.
"This area is so near to the emergency response center and we thought the blaze could be extinguished rapidly, but presently the flames has expanded. I'm so disappointed," she added.
The resident stated that she had been provided little guidance from the government on where to find support.
Numerous Tai Po inhabitants had provided necessities to the victims - including many of coverings and thermal aids.
During interviews about their sentiments regarding the fire, residents stated that "the government is unprepared" and that they were "immensely distraught".
"We desire not to witness any more victims," said a resident.
A senior female who dwells in an apartment in the affected blocks stated she was away when the incident started but that she is concerned about her apartment because it is uninsured.
"I'm extremely troubled that I have no residence to return to currently," she remarked.
