Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's legal representative entered the plea acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney announced he would seek to have the case terminated for various factors including that his the accused, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was indicted soon after Donald Trump urged his attorney general to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald advised the judge they aimed to file several petitions to dismiss the case before a court case, stating the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was improperly appointed to take over the legal matter.

James Comey's legal matter was initially handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under scrutiny from Trump after his investigation into an additional political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

Mr Comey seemed in good spirits as he entered the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was joined by his spouse, Patrice Failor and child his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the former government terminated.

Following the reading to the judge recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in court on mid-week, James Comey was asked if he grasped the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the court.

Historical Information

The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about four months into Donald Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the moment, the director was directing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, the director caused a backlash from liberal politicians when he stated just immediately preceding the national vote that he was examining Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, causing disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys assert the former director provided false information to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he deceived the Senate by saying he had not approved someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also charge James Comey of "wrongfully trying to influence, hinder and impede" the panel by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

In a video the former director posted to his social media after he was accused, he declared he was innocent and accused Trump of acting like a "tyrant".

"My family and I have known for years that there are ramifications to challenging the former president," he said. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."

"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a trial."

The accusations against the former director surfaced after Donald Trump posted on online platforms demanding his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, charge Mr Comey and other people.
