A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public projects. They were built at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
