'We will play a key role in football's future' - newly appointed regulator the regulator's chair

The team's current difficulties represent a a "major concern" and the football regulator is aiming to acquire authority to look into club affairs in comparable cases, its new chair the official has stated.

In a wide-ranging interview, the chairman, who was appointed on Monday, expressed "sympathy" towards the club's followers.

The chairman convened with four supporters' associations connected to the football team recently.

The Championship side have been struggling on and off the field in this season, with the club failing to pay players on time on multiple instances, including in last month.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a significant problem for EFL and a major challenge for the sport," the regulator explained.

"The club represents one of the great brands for the English game and recently we have met fan representatives.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will permit us to bring Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs referred to us if they need to be investigated and dealt with."

Economic Challenges and Ownership Situation

The club's controversial proprietor the current owner indicated in the summer he would be open to selling the club at their home ground, but he has not been able to secure a deal with interested parties.

Missed wage deadlines on time in earlier this year resulted in restrictions being imposed by the league officials in June, stopping Wednesday from completing any transfers or loans for the subsequent signing windows, although the ban was rescinded in late summer.

Official's Viewpoint

Kogan said: "The position was created for the Owls followers, teams facing challenges where supporters are loyal to a local institution that has been part of their lives in many cases.

"I have absolute sympathy for the club's situation, as I do for all the clubs that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or nearly ceased operations, for causes separate from the supporters."

Inquired if the oversight body could require an proprietor to divest a club if they are considered unfit, the chairman responded: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we assemble the facts and comprehend the circumstances, we will."

But the regulator clarified that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be viewed as the ultimate measure and the regulator would prefer to collaborate with owners.

"The last thing what we want to do is start getting involved with an specific team, an particular chairman, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that proprietor to address the issues that the club's facing and the proprietor's dealing with," the chairman stated.

"However, realistically, when you look back over the history of the sport, over the recent generations there have been some owners, a small minority, but some who have been irresponsible in the manner they have operated their clubs and ultimately decline to assume obligation for the future."

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the realm of domestic football is a substantial accomplishment - we need to continue the progress.

"Considerable investment flowing into the game and has been invested for the recent generations, because there are no assurances it will continue to come into football, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on potential dangers and naturally, of the coming seasons."

Elite Division Worries

Top flight officials resisted the establishment of an oversight body because of concerns about detrimental effects on the elite division's competitive balance, but the chairman responded: "I completely endorse the achievement and development as an commercial operation of the Premier League.

"I of all people understand the worry about compromising the Premier League as a premium product of this country. But simultaneously, if you talk to the Premier League after this week's discussion, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, in fact, they have been telling us in private they have a high level of reassurance."

Ideological Links
