The Year 2026 Dubbed the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.
My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this rise, I performed a thorough analysis into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The results tell a compelling story: a steady increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's elevated place in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the explosion in gaming appears particularly strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs have built-in appealing traits for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of unique mechanics.
Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
If these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be on the verge of a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
