British government has placed 11 more nations to its public advisory list regarding the dangers of toxic alcohol toxicity from contaminated spirits.

This updated advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the number of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, following a number of notable events including the deadly loss of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that as little as small amounts of methanol can lead to vision loss or death within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful substance commonly utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. It is not designed for human consumption.

Although it is naturally produced during the manufacture of beverages, licensed producers reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the distillation process.

However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to save money, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.

Government Recommendations for Tourists

Government minister Hamish Falconer stated that each tourist should recognize the indicators of methanol toxicity.

"If you're having drinks overseas, choose reputable establishments and avoid local brews or free shots," Falconer said.

"If something appears suspicious, like a headache that's way worse than normal or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor fast."

The full roster of destinations identified as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
