We'll Name the Greatest Title of the Gaming Era: Semi-Finals
The past two days have been incredibly eventful. On Monday, we marked the five-year anniversary of the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles with a tournament to determine the top exclusive title of this console generation. You were given eight PS5 games and eight Xbox Series X exclusives to face off against each other, culminating in a championship round where the leading contender from each console would battle it out. There have been some nail-biting finishes in the initial matchups, particularly yesterday’s razor-thin votes. Now, it's moment to decide the leading PlayStation and Xbox titles before the championship on Thursday.
The PS5 Side
For PlayStation 5, we have the giant-slayer, Astro Bot. Maybe it should be no surprise given that it won top honors at the previous year's gaming accolades, but its win against God of War Ragnarök feels like a true upset. But to get to the finals, it'll have to go through the most valuable player of the PS5 generation: Insomniac Games. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had a smooth path to the final four, defeating Ghost of Yōtei and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (another title from the same studio!) to secure a spot in the final four. Will Spider-Man defeat a home-grown Sony mascot, or is he destined to become a miniature appearance in the upcoming Astro Bot title?
The Xbox Series X Side
The Xbox Series X side has been even juicier. Emerging victorious from a diverse lineup of competitors is Forza Horizon 5. It's a significant win for the racing adventure title so far, proving that a niche category title deserves to be on the same pedestal as traditional jump-and-run games and story-driven epics. Its final obstacle on the way to the finals is a major challenge, though. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has shown itself as a fan favorite, defeating critical darlings like Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush. Will it overcome a larger-scale title from an well-known franchise that's closely tied to the Xbox brand? If anyone can pull that off, it's probably Indy.
